It had been a couple of years since we were able to make a Red Cone run so we thought it was about time to revisit the cone!  We met at our standard 285 and C-470 location on a beautiful August morning…  Parts of the trail had deteriorated quite a bit making for some great obstacles!  Once above timberline the views are fantastic.  There are complete 360 degree views reaching out for miles.  We arrived at the summit around 11:00 am…  The trail traffic was so light that we actually parked there for a few minutes to enjoy the 12,801 summit!!!  We proceeded down the steep downhill section of the trail.  It has widened over the years creating several different lines.  The previous two runs I had taken straight down the middle.  This year the left line seemed to make the most sense.  The middle had tremendous ruts caused by vehicles and erosion.  Once we passed the turnoff to Webster pass we continued on to the base of Radical Hill to have some lunch.  After lunch we discovered some fragments of an old military F-94 plane that had crashed there in the 50’s.  We couldn’t believe that the remains were still there after all these years!  We made our way up Radical Hill with no problems and eventually back to the highway.  It seems like every time we do Red Cone there is something new to discover!  This years run proved no different!  Can’t wait ‘til next time!                   --Chris…
