When it’s the middle of February and there is fresh powder on the ground what is there to do in Colorado?  If you’re The Edge you lock in the hubs and go for broke!!!  After meeting at our spot at highways 72 & 93 we took the scenic drive through the canyon past Blackhawk.  We merged left at the Apex mine road and proceeded on past to the remaining town of Apex.  We continued on up the trail beyond town to discover some very deep drifts.  After playing on the spur roads (as far as we could in the deep snow) we headed down to lower terrain.  We rediscovered some trails above Central City that we had been on in dry conditions, but never had we attempted them with up to a foot of snow on them!  Our group was well prepared for some full on fun!  We found some nice sized moguls, steep hill climbs, and outrageous snow!

We had some lunch at an old mine shaft beyond the cemetery behind Central City.  The sun warmed us in the cool air.  In the afternoon we decided to head down through “Oh My God” road into Idaho Springs.  We thought we would take the back way down (avoiding the switchbacks straight down).  The packed snow had turned to packed slush and was incredibly slick.  That coupled with the straight down grade of the road made for some very dangerous conditions on the way down.  Knowing that there weren’t any guardrails along the road didn’t seem to make matters better!  We all made it down to Idaho Springs slowly but surely without a problem.  All that snow dozin’ created a powerful thirst!  We met at Tommy Knockers and Knocked down some Tommy’s!  Nothing better to warm you up on a brisk February day!  We had a great day playin’ in the snow!

Cheers,

Chris…
