August 11, 2002 we took it back to the cross!
Holy cross that is… We
began our journey at the world famous Buffalo Heard overlook on I-70 around
7:00am. The good news was that with
everything going on we had a nice light crew for a speedy ascent!
We made it to the trailhead in damn near record time!
After airing down and packing it in we were on the trail at about 9:45.
Weather was perfect, sunny mid 70’s not a cloud in the sky.
The boulders were not in short supply by any stretch of the imagination.
We got through the off-camber rock pile with really no problem at all.
It seemed like that rock in the middle grew a little over the winter
though…there was plenty of Dana black paint chips on it that will testify to
that! It might even have a little
Rover rear trailing arm paint on it… We
got to the French creek crossing and noticed that the boulders were all in
completely different positions. The
lines that we took last year weren’t necessarily the best lines this year.
We all chose the straight over the top on the left hand side method of
attack!

We enjoyed a little lunch in the city at about 11:30. After walking the buildings we then drove above to check out some of the actual mine sites. It was keeler to see some of that area that we didn’t have time to check out the last time. The trip down went without too many bumps and bruises… We ended up back at the entry at about 3:30. Now that’s the correct way to spend a Sunday in Colorado! Cheers!
Christopher…
