A Plane Wreck, Coney Flats and Middle St. Vrain Road
We met up Sunday Morning with a busy day planned. After reading up on several plane wreck sites at coloradowreckchasing.tripod.com/ , we decided to try and find one ourselves. We pick the T-33 site by Allenspark, mostly because there is a lot of wreckage and you can drive most of the way to the site. While in the area we thought we would try Coney & Middle St. Vrain rd.
We started for the plane wreck first. I had programmed the waypoints in my GPS the day before, because finding the entrance to the trail could be difficult. There are several spur/dead-end trails to confuse you. It took us about an hour or so to get to the site, where we rummaged around looking at the busted up parts and melted aluminum. While there everyone was getting hungry so we walked back to the vehicles and had some lunch.
After traversing the trail backward to get back to the campground we proceeded onto the start of Mid St. Vrain. The plan was to take St. Vrain up and return on Coney Flats. Neither trail is exceptionally difficult, but they both had a few fun parts. There was some nice mud and a couple of fun rock piles on Vrain and then there was a fun little water crossing on Coney. We stopped just past the water crossing so everyone could try there skills at skipping rocks across the pond. From there we continued on down Coney. We finally reached the bottom at about five o'clock or so. By this time we were all getting pretty tired and ready to head home.
Overall everyone had a good time, and you couldn't have asked for better weather. We also got to get a glimpse of the beginning of the trees changing colors. What a great day.
