Carnage Canyon
As most of you know that are connected to the 4x4 world, one of our favorite local trails is being closed due to misuse, shooting and dumping. As with any trail closure, this scenario is the worst one for myself as well as my fellow wheelers. The forest service assures us that they will open another trail in the area that will be managed better allowing for trailer staging, and preventing the minority from killing it for the rest of us.
Sunday was the last running (possibly ever) of Carnage. Super Bo was able to assemble a solid group of his K-5 buddies along with most the The Edge Crew. The trail begins with the same bite that I remembered! Taking the optional obstacle to the left opened the day up properly! With the steady rain all week, we knew we wouldn’t have dust to contend with! While it was pouring down in buckets in Denver, we had a reprieve up in the high country until later in the morning… Nonetheless the rocks were wet and there was mud everywhere… Perfect day for some streambed climbin’! The rain continued to increase as the day wore on… With the trail below becoming an active stream, things became very interesting. Of course there is always the potential for a flash flood, so we paid close attention to the weather as we proceeded. We had a couple of stock vehicles with us that took a couple of tugs, other than that we had no problem getting everyone through every obstacle. The mud hill climb at the end of the trail was so fun I had to do it twice… Once with momentum, once just above idle! Man, what a final run for one of our all time favorites. Carnage will always be remembered as one of the best short trails in Colorado… Maybe lost for now, but never forgotten! Lets prevent others from closure! Cheers to Carnage! Christopher…
